Prayers for Pastor Nadarkhani of Iran

Pastor Nadarkhani and family

In my seven years of working for Open Doors, never have I encountered a story of persecution that has affected me as much as that of Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani. Yesterday, those who were praying for him were struck with the heart-breaking news that the final court had sentenced him to death. Even worse is that he can be executed at any point, without warning. It could be tomorrow or it could be 10 years from now…and there is a chance that his wife and children may not know until after he is executed.

This article has the background on his whole ordeal. His case is being recognized by many around the world. Even the White House issued a statement today:

The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms reports that Iranian authorities’ reaffirmed a death sentence for Iranian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani for the sole reason of his refusal to recant his Christian faith.  This action is yet another shocking breach of Iran’s international obligations, its own constitution, and stated religious values.  The United States stands in solidarity with Pastor Nadarkhani, his family, and all those who seek to practice their religion without fear of persecution—a fundamental and universal human right.  The trial and sentencing process for Pastor Nadarkhani demonstrates the Iranian government’s total disregard for religious freedom, and further demonstrates Iran's continuing violation of the universal rights of its citizens.  The United States calls upon the Iranian authorities to immediately lift the sentence, release Pastor Nadarkhani, and demonstrate a commitment to basic, universal human rights, including freedom of religion.  The United States renews its calls for people of conscience and governments around the world to reach out to Iranian authorities and demand Pastor Nadarkhani's immediate release.

Now, more than ever, we need to pray for this dear brother, who has been so faithful to follow Christ, no matter what the circumstances are.

This past week I had the opportunity to go to the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries was the Keynote speaker on Tuesday evening. He talked about heaven and how glorious it is going to be. He talked about people like Paul who had seen heaven and how once they had seen it, they longed to never leave it.

This sermon kept coming to mind as I read more and more reports about Pastor Nadarkhani. Even though it would be the most painful experience for his loved ones, he will be with Jesus. And just as importantly, I know that his faithfulness has been an amazing testimony….one that I believe will bring many to a saving relationship with Jesus.

Dear, sovereign God,
We pray to you for your mercy and grace to Pastor Nardarkahni and his family. Please surround him with your presence and your reassurances, that whatever happens your holy mighty name will be glorified through him and his dear family. We know that in your power he can be released, yet we don't know your ultimate purposes. Multiply believers for your kingdom through this situation. In Jesus most holy name we pray,
Amen

Lord God, heavenly King, You give to us the gift of government. Through those You have placed in positions of leadership. You provide for our protection and our daily needs. Preserve and protect Pastor Nadarkhani and all people from those who us. Give them godly wisdom, that their decisions would be God pleasing. Grant that their actions would enable people to worship You freely. We pray this in the name of our Savior. Amen

Dearest Heavenly Father, our hearts break for Pastor Yousef and his beloved family and for all our precious brothers and sisters who are persecuted for their faith in Your Redeeming Son, Jesus. Keep our hearts stirred to pray diligently for them. When we sit down to eat the food You have provided for us, bring the hurting to our minds. When we lay down in our warm beds, give us grateful hearts and remind us to pray for those who won't be able to sleep because they are cold, hungry, in pain and are afraid. Please strengthen, encourage, heal, comfort and bless them with Your Peace. It's difficult to understand but, we praise You in the Strong name of Jesus. Amen

It's sobering to consider that if I were in Youcef's shoes. I pray that The Holy Spirit give Youcef a sense of peace that goes far beyond understanding. I pray for his precious wife and two beautiful boys. I pray for Pastor Youcef's release and return to his family. I pray that the Holy Spirit will touch the Iranian authorities who are holding Youcef. I pray that a spirit of compasion over take them and that they could see fit to renounce the sentence placed on Brother Nadarkhani. I pray for the peace of mind for Youcef even in this dark hour. If the unthinkable should happen, we know that Youcef will be with our Precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God, please put an army of angelic hosts around him and his family in this critical hour and for such a time as this. In Jesus Name, Amen.

I am joining my prayers with many others for Pastor Yousef! Heavenly Father, please work a miracle in this situation and deliver your precious servant from the death sentence and even prison that he may live out the full number of his days proclaiming Jesus to others and being a strong testimony for You. Just as You sent an angel to deliver Peter from prison (as the church was praying for him!), You are no respecter of persons. You can do it again, and we ask that You will. We ask this in the powerful Name of Jesus Christ, amen!
